Brett graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in December 1964, married Jocelyn Lindsey of Downer at St. John's in Reid soon after and then joined the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment in Adelaide as a Lieutenant. He served with 4RAR in Vietnam from 21 May 1968 to 30 May 1969 and was Mentioned in Despatches. The AWM record is a film shot in 1968 at a Christmas party at Duntroon Oval given for the families of soldiers in Vietnam by the Army Wives Association. Among those giving Christmas messages to the soldiers was Mrs. Brett and their children.
