Notes
After leaving school Bootes worked on the family property 'Bywong' near Sutton. He joined the light horse militia in 1937 and enlisted in 1940 with the 7th Cavalry Regiment, serving in Syria, Papua and New Guinea. During late 1942 the 7th Cavalry Regiment fought the Japanese along the Sanananda track on the north coast of Papua. Bootes was discharged in early 1944 because of malaria.
