Bircham was based at RAAF Fairbairn when he posted to Vietnam with No.9 Squadron. He served there 11 March 1970 to 12 March 1971. In 1969 he had been part of a helicopter crew operating in Papua New Guinea. By 1985 he was based at Amberley in Queensland and had risen to the rank of Warrant Officer.
