Notes
Marcellus (Marcy also known as Marc) Bateson worked as a proof reader for The Canberra Times before enlisting. He was mobilised with the 3rd Battalion (militia) on 9 August 1941 and promoted to Corporal shortly afterwards. He married Joyce Patterson in Melbourne on 20 September 1941 and then served in Papua with the 3rd Battalion from May 1942. He returned to Australia in January 1943 and transferred to the 36th Battalion in May 1943. Bateson was sent to New Guinea in July 1943 but was hospitalised the following month with scrub typhus. He recovered four months later and rejoined the 36th Battalion only to be sent to New Britain in 1944. He died in Queensland on 11 September 2016 aged 100 years.
